New year outdoor decorations, similar to but smaller and more colourful than kadomatsu. They often incorporate rice-straw (like the shimenawa) or a rice-cake and motifs such as the crane (for longevity) and the Japanese flag. They are hung to attract good luck and keep away misfortune.
